I have turned myself inside out to try to find the words. Beneath my skin is a scream.

Jess was a healthy young woman in her early twenties, newly graduated from university. Life awaited. A post-viral illness struck her down. With fury and tenderness, she has written an unflinching account of chronic illness grief.

I am unravelling in losses like ribbons piled up around my feet.

This is not a recovery memoir reflecting on past illness and charting a return to health. It is an immediate, electric prose poem, a scream of anguish, an annihilating and liberating exploration of self-identity. A gentle surrender to the present.

About this book

Jess has been writing stories since childhood. Her first completed work, aged eight, was a fully illustrated Horrid Henry fanfiction, lovingly laminated by her grandma. Eighteen years on, The Sun-Room – a prose poem memoir about chronic illness grief – is her debut publication.

In 2020, Jess graduated from UEA with a degree in English Literature with Creative Writing. She lives in South London where, health permitting, she writes, reads, and enjoys or despises football.
