I have turned myself inside out to try to find the words. Beneath my skin is a scream.

Jess was a healthy young woman in her early twenties, newly graduated from university. Life awaited. A post-viral illness struck her down. With fury and tenderness, she has written an unflinching account of chronic illness grief.

I am unravelling in losses like ribbons piled up around my feet.

This is not a recovery memoir reflecting on past illness and charting a return to health. It is an immediate, electric prose poem, a scream of anguish, an annihilating and liberating exploration of self-identity. A gentle surrender to the present.

About Jess Watts

Jess has been writing stories since childhood. Her first completed work, aged eight, was a fully illustrated Horrid Henry fanfiction, lovingly laminated by her grandma. Eighteen years on, The Sun-Room – a prose poem memoir about chronic illness grief – is her debut publication. In 2020, Jess graduated from UEA with a degree in English Literature with Creative Writing. She lives in South London where, health permitting, she writes, reads, and enjoys or despises football.

Mission Statement

Founded in 2005, Linen Press is the only UK-wide feminist independent publisher.
At a time when female autonomy and rights are under threat, our books are important for the recognition and empowerment of the female experience.
We rejoice in the strength and originality of female and non-binary creative voices and champion those who are underrepresented and marginalised.
The collective background of our writers is a patchwork of cultures, countries, ages and writing styles as we share stories that speak to women across barriers and boundaries.
