I have turned myself inside out to try to find the words. Beneath my skin is a scream.
Jess Watts’ short, poetic, powerful memoir The Sun-Room came in as an unsolicited submission and within a page I was captivated by the energy of her raw-to-bleeding cry of anger and grief at being felled by Chronic Fatigue.
Jess is a talented young writer who has constructed an exquisite prose poem that is a searing description of what it means to be ill and disabled in a society that values health and productivity.
There is redemption too as Jess comes to terms with what she still has. The Sun-Room is her bedroom, lit with quiet moments of peace.
Out April 4th 2025.
This is what it’s like. And there is beauty in the awfulness of it all. Jess’s use of words is poetic and raw, each sentence is beautifully crafted and true.

The Sun-Room is a personal and powerful look at how we define ourselves and measure worth… Fierce, haunting, and beautifully written.
