One Billion Rising!

14 February marked the largest global action in history to end violence against women and girls. One Billion Rising mobilized over a billion people worldwide, inspiring women and men in 207 countries to come together and express their outrage, and to strike, dance and RISE against violence.

LP author Hema Macherla has written two books depicting the struggles of women in India and in arranged marriages in the UK. She gives voice to the ‘social outcasts’ who fight back against the culture of rape and abuse. Her heroines are all ‘fallen women’ who find the strength to set out on the road to independence and freedom.

We’d like to help those suffering in India today, and support those fighting for a better tomorrow. We will donate £1 from every copy of Hema Macherla’s novels to One Billion Rising.

If you would like to know more about the cultural background and motives behind the courageous grass roots action happening right now in India, please buy one or both of Hema Macherla’s novels. Blue Eyes is about eighteen year old Anjali who is about to be burned alive on her elderly husband’s funeral pyre. She runs away only to end up in a harem where she is groomed to become a sexual slave. Breeze from the River Manjeera brings you an insider’s view of cruelty within an arranged marriage. The endearing Neela comes to the UK expecting love but receives abuse. We cheer her on as she tries to escape her cruel fate.

Both books are available from the Linen Press Bookshop. We are offering you a discount and we will donate £1 a book to One Billion Rising when you use the code BILLION.
