Linen Press – a new venture twice over

October 9, 2018, posted in Blog

May We Borrow Your Country by The Whole Kahani

We have branched out with a flourish. Adding to our list of novels and memoirs, this is the first book of short-form writing to be published by Linen Press as well as the first book written by an established collective of writers.
May We Borrow Your Country looks at dislocation and displacement with sympathy, tolerance and humour. The pieces are peopled by courageous, poignant, eccentric individuals who cross borders, accommodate to new cultures and try to establish identities in new places. In doing so, they encounter different versions of themselves, like reflections in a room of trick mirrors.
The stories are written by women. They are evocative and multi-layered in their portrayal of relationships, family, careers, ambition and friendship. They offer a fresh, contemporary look at metamorphosis and many catch that fleeting moment of transition between the familiar and the new.
Foreword by Preti Taneja, author of We That Are Young, winner of the 2018 Desmond Eliot

The Whole Kahani (The Complete Story) is a collective of British novelists, poets and screenwriters of South Asian origin with an impressive array of awards: Reshma Ruia, Kavita A. Jindal, Mona Dash, Radhika Kapur, CG Menon, Shibani Lal, Deblina Chakrabarty and Nadia Kabir Barb. Their first anthology, Love Across a Broken Map was published in 2016 to critical acclaim. www.thewholekahani.com/

Mission Statement

Founded in 2005, Linen Press is the only UK-wide feminist independent publisher.
At a time when female autonomy and rights are under threat, our books are important for the recognition and empowerment of the female experience.
We rejoice in the strength and originality of female and non-binary creative voices and champion those who are underrepresented and marginalised.
The collective background of our writers is a patchwork of cultures, countries, ages and writing styles as we share stories that speak to women across barriers and boundaries.
